Pet Stop vs. Other Dog Fence Brands

Comparing dog fence companies in Birmingham?

Invisible Fence®, DogWatch®, Dog Guard®, PetSafe®: these are real companies with working equipment, and pretending otherwise would insult you. The differences that actually matter live in three places most sales pitches skip: the receiver on your dog's neck, the cost of keeping it running, and who answers the phone in year five.

Serving Birmingham and Central Alabama since 1994. We service most major brands, including the ones on this page.

A comparison from people who work on all of them

We have installed Pet Stop since 2002, and we have repaired and serviced the other brands' systems the entire time. Wire breaks, dead transmitters, collars that stopped holding a dog: those service calls are where you learn what equipment is actually like to live with. What follows is that experience, not a brochure. Where a claim depends on a specific model or dealer, we say so, and we tell you what to ask.

The names you'll run into

A quick, fair orientation. All of these are underground-wire systems at heart, which means the wire is rarely what separates them. The receiver, the service model, and the ongoing costs are.

The big name

Invisible Fence® brand

  • The Kleenex of the category. People say "invisible fence" the way they say Kleenex for tissue. It is a brand owned by Radio Systems Corporation, not the category itself.
  • Established equipment and a large dealer network. The systems work. Most of the frustration we hear from owners is about cost of ownership, proprietary batteries, and service scheduling, not the core technology.
  • Proprietary ecosystem. Batteries, collars, and service generally flow through the brand's own channel. Ask what that runs per year before you sign.
The dealer brands

The other dealer brands

  • DogWatch® is a legitimate dealer-installed brand with a local presence here. Their equipment is credible; the comparison usually comes down to receiver features, warranty terms, and the individual dealer.
  • Dog Guard® is another dealer-installed brand you may get quoted. Same advice: compare receivers and warranties, not just install price.
  • PetSafe® is largely a retail, do-it-yourself product line. It is the budget path, and it can work, but you are the installer, the trainer, and the service department.

Where Pet Stop actually differs

Four differences we will put our name on, because we live with them every day.

Correction range set to your dog, not a default

Every dog is different. A setting that stops one dog does nothing for the next. Pet Stop receivers run an unusually wide range, from levels many people cannot feel at the bottom to levels that hold determined working breeds, and we set it to your dog in person, in your yard. This is the single biggest reason we get called to replace other brands' systems: the dog habituated and the equipment had nowhere to go.

No proprietary battery lock-in

Pet Stop receivers either recharge on a cradle or run standard replaceable batteries you can buy from us or keep in a drawer. There is no battery plan required to keep your fence working, and no required monthly or annual fee of any kind on the system itself.

We service everyone's equipment

We repair and service most major brands, including Invisible Fence® brand, Dog Guard®, and PetSafe® systems. Brand-name dealers typically service their own brand. That difference tells you something about the model: we win business by fixing whatever is in your yard, and earning the upgrade later.

The same local company since 1994

Pet Stop of Alabama is owner-operated, and the people who quoted your yard are the people who stand behind it. We have been here 32 years, trained nearly 10,000 dogs, and hold 800+ reviews at 4.9 stars. Whoever you choose, weigh who will actually show up in year five.

One more thing worth knowing: Pet Stop equipment is designed and manufactured in the USA. If where your equipment comes from matters to you, ask every company you call the same question.

Six questions to ask every company you call

Including us. These six answers will separate the quotes faster than any brochure, and any company worth hiring will answer them without flinching. Our answers are underneath each one.

1

Will you service a system you didn't install?

Our answer: Yes. We repair and service most major brands. A company that only touches its own equipment has you locked in the day the check clears.

2

What do collar batteries cost per year, and where do I buy them?

Our answer: Rechargeable receivers cost nothing per year in batteries. Replaceable-battery models use standard batteries, typically one every 2 to 3 months, available from us or kept on hand. No plan, no subscription.

3

Who sets the correction level, and how wide is the range?

Our answer: We do, in person, in your yard, matched to your dog, and we come back to adjust it if the dog changes. Pet Stop's range runs unusually wide in both directions.

4

What is the receiver warranty, in writing?

Our answer: Our Link and UltraTuff receivers carry a lifetime receiver warranty. Other models carry two years. Ask every company for the warranty terms on the specific collar in your quote, not the brand's best one.

5

Is any monthly or annual fee required to keep the fence working?

Our answer: No. Optional service plans exist if you want them, but your fence works without one, forever.

6

Who trains the dog, and what happens if it isn't working?

Our answer: We train your dog in your yard and come back if the dog needs more. Nearly 10,000 dogs so far. Training is where fences succeed or fail, so do not let anyone hand-wave this one.

Side by side

Our column is fact. The other column is the honest answer: it varies by brand, model, and dealer, so the right move is to ask, and now you know what to ask.

Already own one of these systems?

You may not need a new fence at all

If you already have an Invisible Fence® brand system in the ground, your wire and transmitter are probably fine. Pet Stop receivers work with most Invisible Fence® transmitters, including Boundary Plus® systems, which means you can fix the part that is frustrating you, the collar, without buying a new fence. We also repair wire breaks and failed transmitters on most brands.

What we will tell you at the estimate

We quote most properties from satellite imagery, usually the same day you ask, and quote what your property actually needs. If another path genuinely fits you better, a physical fence, a GPS collar on open acreage, or keeping the system you already own, we will say so. We have written all of that down publicly, which is not something companies do when they are afraid of the comparison.

We would rather send you to the right answer than sell you the wrong one. That is how you stay in business here for 32 years.

Questions brand shoppers ask us

The comparisons people are actually typing into Google, answered straight.

Is Pet Stop better than Invisible Fence®?
Both are established, working systems, so the honest answer lives in the specifics. Pet Stop receivers run a wider correction range set to your dog in person, use rechargeable or standard batteries with no required plan, and carry lifetime receiver warranties on our top models. Invisible Fence® brand has a large network and proven equipment, with a more proprietary ecosystem for batteries and service. Compare the specific collar, the warranty in writing, and the yearly cost of ownership, and the decision usually makes itself.
What is the difference between "invisible fence" and Invisible Fence® brand?
Invisible Fence® is a brand name owned by Radio Systems Corporation, used the way people say Kleenex for tissue. The category is underground or hidden dog fences, and several brands make them, including Pet Stop, DogWatch®, and Dog Guard®. If someone quoted you "an invisible fence," find out which brand they actually mean.
How does Pet Stop compare to the other dealer-installed brands?
All three are dealer-installed underground systems, so compare the parts that differ: receiver features and correction range, battery type and yearly cost, the receiver warranty in writing, and the dealer who will service it. Our top receivers are rechargeable with lifetime warranties, correction is set to your dog in person, and we have been the same local company since 1994.
Why not just buy a PetSafe® kit and install it myself?
You can, and for some people it works. Go in knowing you are the installer, the trainer, and the service department, and that training is where most do-it-yourself fences fail. If the budget only allows a kit, do the training patiently and completely. If the dog matters more than the difference in price, a professionally installed and trained system is what we would put on our own dog.
Do you service Invisible Fence® and other brands of hidden fence systems?
We repair and service most major brands, including Invisible Fence® brand, Dog Guard®, and PetSafe® systems: wire breaks, transmitters, boundary changes, and collar problems. Call us about your specific system and we will tell you on the phone whether we can help.
Can I keep my existing buried wire if I switch to Pet Stop?
In most cases, yes. The wire carries a signal and does not care whose equipment drives it. If your existing loop is intact, switching usually means new electronics on the same wire, which costs far less than a new installation.
